Extraction sized to the job
Truck-mounted and portable extraction units pull standing water off hard floors and out of carpet and pad. How much equipment is needed depends on what the provider finds.
Standing water keeps soaking into flooring, baseboards and cabinet bases for as long as it sits. An independent provider removes the water first, then works out how far it traveled before anything is torn out.
Before anyone walks in, treat standing water near outlets, extension cords or appliances as live. If the water reached a wall outlet or the air handler, stay out of the room and say so when you call. Turning the breaker off for that area is only worth doing if the panel itself is dry and easy to reach.

Not every job needs every item below. Ask the provider to separate the emergency work from the repairs that come after, so you can see what is being charged for and why.

Moisture meters and a thermal camera show where water traveled under flooring, behind base cabinets and up the drywall. The wet area is usually wider than the visible one.
Furniture gets blocked or moved off wet flooring, and contents that are still dry are separated from the ones that are not before the drying equipment goes in.
Extraction is the first step, not the whole job. Once the standing water is gone, the materials that absorbed it still have to dry, and that is a separate decision with its own quote. Ask which rooms need equipment and for how long.
Most jobs continue into structural drying. If the water came from a failed pipe, see burst pipe cleanup, and if it came in from outside, see storm and flood cleanup.
If a dishwasher, a washing machine hose or a water heater was the source, see appliance leak cleanup. Wondering whether flooring and drywall can be saved at all? Read dry and restore versus tear out and replace, or check the listed areas for your address on the service areas page.
The quote follows what the provider finds: how much water there is, what it soaked into, how many rooms are affected and whether the water was clean, gray or sewage. An independent provider prices the work after walking the property; ask to see the readings behind it.
Availability and scheduling depend on the independent provider and the property location. When you call, say if water is still running, if it is on a second floor or if a commercial space is involved.
Only on a small, clean spill in a room with the power on and nothing wet near outlets. Never use one on sewage or on floodwater from outside, and never run an extension cord across standing water. See sewage cleanup for what to do instead.
No. Wet carpet is heavy and hides tack strips, and moving it around spreads water into dry rooms. Move small items off the floor if you can do it safely and leave the rest for the provider.
Call and describe where the water came from and what it reached to check whether an independent provider is available.
